Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) 2015

This year, Heung Chung students got excellent results with a total accumulation of 792 Level 4 or above, which is equal to 70.3% of the total number of subjects sat. In total, 88.9% of our students have met the general entrance requirements for local undergraduate university programmes.

Our Principal, Mr. Lam Ka Yiu shared the joyful moments with the students.

Home Coming Day 2015

Our Annual Home Coming Day was successfully held on 4th July 2015. During the handover Ceremony of the Alumni Association, our Principal, Mr. LAM, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the former Committee Members for their contributions and presented Certificates of Appointment to the new Committee Members (2015-2017).

After the ceremony, graduates from all years played ball games and had competitions with current members of the Basketball and Volleyball Teams. They all had a joyful and memorable day.

A Day on Adventure Ship

The outdoor sailing program, Adventure Ship, organized by Guidance Team was successfully held on 2nd July 2015. Thirty-nine S.2 to S.5 students attended the training course joyfully. Through a series of adventure activities, they learned how to cooperate with others, shoulder responsibility, and enhance team spirit. Students were given chances to enhance their self-esteem, self-reliance and sense of team spirit. Students explored their potential and would like to join the program again.

International Children Painting Competition in Hong Kong

International Children Painting Competition in Hong Kong was organized by Promotion of Young Artists Foundation. Through the on-site painting competition, talented young artists from different countries gathered together and expressed their artistic impression on different sceneries of Hong Kong, including Hong Kong landmarks and historical architecture. The aim of the competition was to develop local teenagers’ interest in art, enhance their artistic standards, widen their horizon in the field of art, strengthen parents’ understanding towards art and promote art exchange between young artists from Hong Kong and overseas.

Parent-Teacher Association Spring Picnic

Parent-Teacher Association Spring Picnic was held on 3rd May, 2015. The first spot was Charles K Kao Auditorium at Hong Kong Science Park. Then we had lunch at Lung Wah Hotel. After lunch, we visited the Fort guns at Sha Tau Kok, Tam Shui Hang and Nam Chung Luk Keng landscape ecological zones. At around five o'clock, we returned to Yuen Long with delight and joy.

2014-15 Grantham Scholars of the Year

Grantham Scholars of the Year was introduced with the aim of rewarding all-around students of good character with outstanding academic achievements, active in extra-curricular activities and devoted to school and community services. Only 24 students will be selected to receive this prestigious award in Hong Kong every year. Our graduate Ms LEE Lai-shan who obtained five 5**s and two 5*s in HKDSE and had outstanding performance in extra-curricular activities and community services was awarded the Grantham Scholars of the Year Award, despite the keen competition from a number of participants.

2014-2015 Rotary Inter-school Debating Competition

Our school has participated in the 2014-2015 Rotary Inter-school Debating Competition (Social Inclusion). After several rounds of keen competition, our school was awarded the Champion in the final competition against Wa Ying College. Our students had outstanding performances in the competition, and were awarded The Best Debater Award and The Best Interrogative Speaker Award five times. The competition was jointly hosted by the Rotary Clubs in Area 8 of District 3450, Rotary Club of Hong Kong Financial Centre, Rotary Club of Kowloon West and Rotary Club of Kowloon East, with Sing Tao Daily as media partner.

Challenging ourselves – Hiking at Devil’s Peak

22 students participated in a half-day hiking trip organized by the Guidance Team on 16 May 2015. Enjoying the walk around Lei Yue Mun, they visited the Battery on Devil’s Peak, admired the beautiful scenic view of East Kowloon and knew more about the geology, ecology and culture of Lei Yue Mun. Through the activity, they built up their stamina and physical fitness. They are all very interested in joining this kind of activity in the nearest future.

The Geography Field Study- Wetland Conservation at Mai Po Nature Reserve

Thirty seven junior form students joined the Wetland Reserve Education Programme organized by WWF. Under the supervision of our Geography teachers, they helped recovering the health of wetland by clearing the weeds. They learnt the concepts and importance of wetland conservation management and gained memorable experience in Mai Po. Their environmental awareness has been enhanced.

The Geography cross border field study at Taiwan

To enhance students' interest in Geography, facilitate them to apply knowledge and concepts they have learnt in Geography to the reality and consolidate their learning, teachers from Geography Department designed a cross border field study from March 25 to 28. Thirty students joined the tour and conducted in-depth enquiry studies about the geological and ecological landscape, social, cultural, and economic development of Taiwan and made comparisons with those in Hong Kong. During the trip, students were greatly engaged in the application of their knowledge and asked a lot of questions. They broadened their personal horizons and got memorable experience.

US Consulate Speaker Program

To broaden students’ horizons and let them know more about western culture, the English Club has invited Mrs. Harley-Lewis, guest from the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau, to give us a talk on US traditions and holidays. South China Morning Post and Hong Kong Jockey Club have organized the "2014 Student of the Year" to recognize and award outstanding students in seven categories including community contributor, sports, performing art etc. 4E Huang Cheuk Wai (Performing Artist), 5C Chan Yan Ki (Community Contributor), 5E Lai Chui Ting (Visual Artist) and 6C Man Sze Yan (Linguist of Cantonese) has been shortlisted. The Biliteracy and Trilingualism Competition and Speech Competition

The competition is held by the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers.5B Wu Yan Hang, 5E Liu Yao Xin and 5E Cheng Hok Yung successfully entered the semi-final round. 5B Wu Yan Hang was selected as one of the ten awardees and got Certificate of Merit, Excellent Chinese and English Compositions Certificate. 5E Liu Yao Xin was awarded the Excellent Chinese Composition Certificate.

Lingnan Community Education Award

The Community College at Lingnan University and the Lingnan Institute of Future Education have organized the Lingnan Community Education Award to recognize and award students who are capable of overcoming difficulties and actively participating in community service. 5C Chan Yan Ki was selected as has awarded one of the top three students in the category of community service. She shared her own experience in helping the underprivileged and the mentally-disabled. She sees voluntary work is a meaningful and rewarding experience and is eager to contribute the society as a volunteer in the future.

The 13th Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2014

In Heung Chung, learning is not confined to the textbooks and classrooms. Eight S.2 students of our school joined the 13th Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2014 from 13th to 27 th July. This programme is organised by Singapore Ministry of Education and Hong Kong Education Bureau. During this period, they had to study in different secondary schools in Singapore and live with the host families. The aim of this exchange programme is to promote cultural and educational exchanges of the students from the two cities.

The Junior Police Call Club of our school was interviewed by Digital Broadcasting Corporation Hong Kong Limited (DBC) on behalf of Yuen Long Junior Police Call concerning the participation of our students in JPC activities on 27th October, 2014. In the interview, our school's representatives stated that our members actively joined various activities and were awarded various prizes due to their excellent performance. Through participating in the activities, students developed a lot of skills including organisation skills, communication skills and problem-solving skills and understood the importance of crime prevention.

“Youth Geo Ambassador” Overseas Field Visit and Exchange(Taiwan – Matsu and Taipei)

Three S.4 geography students joined the Youth Geo Ambassador Training Programme organized by the NWS Holdings Limited and Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong. They had excellent performance and were selected from more than a hundred teams of students to participate the Geoconservation visit of Taiwan on 7th-9th, November. During the visit, the students observed the geo-landscape features at Matsu and understood the history and the culture of the local people. At the last day of the trip, the students visited the National Taiwan University and exchanged their experience in Geo-conservation with Professor LIN Jiun-Chuan, the authoritative scholar in Geo-conservation. They gained valuable knowledge from Professor LIN about the sustainability and conservation of geo-landscape.

The Geography Field Study at Tai O

Thirty junior form students joined a geography field study at Tai O on 4th November, 2014 organized by the geography teachers. They visited Tai O to know about the historical development of fishing industry of Hong Kong and the daily work of local fishermen. Furthermore, students know more about the ocean ecology and coastal landform features. Through experiencing the life of Tai O residents and tasting the lock snacks, they had a memorial experience.

On 1 November 2014, 25 students of our school participated in Eco Expo Asia 2014 held at Asia World Expo. Students had a wonderful experience of exploring up-to-date technology of green enterprises. Moreover, they also joined a forum on “Breakwaters” as well as a chatting session with Secretary for Environment, Mr. Wong Kam Sing.

Careers Planning – HKUST Business School Admission Talk

On 9 October, the Career Team invited Mr. Colin Siu, Program Manager, Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions, Business School of HKUST to give a talk to S.6 and S.5 students so as to update students on the programs offered by the institution. The Community Chest Dress Causal Day

The Community Chest Dress Casual Day 2014/2015 was held on 30 September 2014. To answer the Chest’s appeal, students and teachers put on their causal attires on the day to show their support and care for the needy. Over $34,600 was raised and the entire donation will be allocated to social welfare agencies supported by the Chest to help the needy and develop comprehensive social welfare services in Hong Kong, promoting the idea of fraternity.

In August 2014, our students 4D Wu Yan Hang and 4E Sha Wing Shuen participated in Community Participation Scheme for Organizing Exchange Tours to the Mainland 2014-2015. They visited a school in Heyuan and helped students to learn English and Science. HKSAR Outstanding Students Selection 2014

With a view to encouraging secondary school students to utilize their potentials and strive to foster a balanced development among academic performance, extra-curricular activities, community services, leadership and self-awareness, JCI Yuen Long and the HKSAR Outstanding Students’ Union have organized the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Outstanding Students Award 2014.

After attending several rounds of interviews, S.6 Lee Lai Shan and S.5 Man Sze Yan were shortlisted to be the finalists, and LEE Lai-shan was finally selected to be one of the ten outstanding students.
