Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) 2018

This year, Heung Chung students got excellent results with a total accumulation of 632 Level 4 or above, which is equal to 73.4% of the total number of subjects sat. In total, 91.3% of our students have met the general entrance requirements for local undergraduate university programmes.

Our Principal, Mr. Lam Ka Yiu shared the joyful moments with the students.

School Closing Ceremony

The annual School Closing Ceremony was held on 10 July 2018. The whole school assembled at the school hall and sang the national anthem to kick off the ceremony. The Principal then made a speech to commend students’ excellent performance throughout the year and expressed his gratitude to all teaching staff and students for their effort made.

Yuen Long District Outstanding Students Selection 2018

The Yuen Long District Outstanding Students Selection 2018 organized by the Federation of Yuen Long Youth aims to encourage students to develop their moral education, academic performance, physical and art education, and participate in activities related to social welfare. Candidates participating in the selection were required to submit an essay introducing themselves and a passage about "When I was created". They then needed to attend an individual interview and a group discussion, in which their leadership, multi-perspective thinking and communication skills were assessed. Nine Heung Chung students were shortlisted to attend the final round, which consisted of an individual interview, a group discussion and a team race. In the team race, the team of S.3 Hung Tsz-hong won the "Best Cooperation Team Award ".

3rd CHAMPIONSHIP IN A ROW!
Champion of the 9th Inter-Government Secondary Schools
English Debating Competition 2017-2018

For the third consecutive year, our English Debate Team has won the Inter-Government Secondary Schools Debating Competition Grand Final. We were awarded the Champion in the 9th Inter-Government Secondary Schools English Debating Competition 2017-2018 Grand Final against Tuen Mun Government Secondary School, with all four out of five judges giving us the victory over our opponent on 4th July 2018.

The Golden Jubilee Banquet

The N.T. Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School’s Golden Jubilee Banquet was successfully held on 19th May 2018 at Red Royalty Banquet Restaurant. We were honoured by the presence of Mr. LAU Ip Keung, Kenneth, BBS, M.H., J.P., Chairperson of our School Council, Mr. Man Fu Wan, B.B.S., Vice Chairperson of our School Council, Mr. LEE Kam-kwong, Principal Assistant Secretary for Education (School Development), Mr. Enoch YUEN, JP, District Officer (Yuen Long), Ms Cynthia CHAN Chin-woon, Chairperson of the School Management Committee, members of the School Council and the School Management Committee, Principal LAM Ka-yiu, guests, parents, alumni, staff and students. With 96 tables and over 1100 guests, the banquet enjoyed by everyone involved was a huge success.

2017-18 Grantham Scholars of the Year

Grantham Scholars of the Year was introduced with the aim of rewarding all-around students of good character with outstanding academic achievements, active in extra-curricular activities and devoted to school and community services. Only 24 students will be selected to receive this prestigious award in Hong Kong every year. Following in the footsteps of Ms Lee Lai Shan, Ms HO Tsoi Lam and Ms CHAN Yan Ki who were awarded Grantham Scholars of the Year, our graduate Ms CHAN Sze Wing attaining five Level 5**, one Level 5* and one Level 5 and Mr HUI Tsz Nam attaining five Level 5** and one Level 5* have won the same award owing to their outstanding results in HKDSE and performance in extra-curricular activities and community services.

The Next Influencers 2017-2018
Secondary School Digital Marketing Competition

Among 50 participating teams, our students 4C Chan Lok Yiu, 4E Yick Wai King, 4E Luk Ka Wai and 4E Fung Tsz Ying have won the “The Next Influencers 2017-2018” Secondary School Digital Marketing Competition supported by MTR Corporation Limited. The awardees would have an opportunity to participate in an exchange tour in Beijing this summer. Their video clip “Day Dreaming” describes the persistence of teenagers in realizing their dreams despite the materialism of modern society. Their performance was highly commended by all the judges.

Champion of the Rotary Inter-School Debate Competition

Our School Debate Team was awarded the Champion in the Rotary Inter-School Debate Competition against St. Teresa Secondary School, with all five judges giving us the victory over our opponent on 30th May 2018. This year, 29 secondary schools participated in the competition. Prior to the Grand Final, our Debate Team defeated Ying Wa College and St. Mark’s in the Quarter Final and Semi-Final competitions respectively.

Outstanding Student Leaders Award 2017-2018

The Hok Yau Club Potential Development Centre has organized the “Outstanding Student Leaders Award 2017-2018” to recognize and award S.4 to S.6 student leaders who have shown remarkable levels of responsibility and contribution to their schools and society. After two rounds of interviews, S.5E Tang Yui Chit was short-listed to be one of the initial thirty two student leaders. After the final round of interviews, he was ultimately selected as one of the ten Outstanding Student Leaders.

Mainland Exchange Programme:
The Maritime Silk Road in Yangjiang and Heritage Conservation in Kaiping

Forty of our S.3 students were pleased to visit Guangdong from 12th to 14th April under the Mainland Exchange Programme for Junior Secondary and Upper Primary Students held by the “Passing on the Torch” National Education Platform. The programme is very much aligned with The National Education Platform’s goal to promote students’ knowledge about cultural conservation and broaden their horizons. During the visit, students gained the opportunity to learn about Chinese history, the Maritime Silk Road in Yangjiang and heritage conservation in Kaiping by visiting Kaiping Diaolou, Mei's Grand Courtyard and The Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum. They were also offered the valuable chance to pay a visit to Changsha Experimental School in which they interacted with local students and experienced school life in Guangdong.

Parent-Teacher Association Spring Picnic

Parent-Teacher Association Spring Picnic was held on 15th April, 2018. We arrived at the first destination, Aviation Discovery Centre of Hong Kong International Airport. Then, we headed to Regal Airport Hotel to enjoy a fulfilling lunch buffet in a relaxing ambience. Tung Chung North Park was the end of the schedule where parents, teachers and students enjoyed the tranquility of the nature. We all had a good time.

Admission Talk from The University of Hong Kong for S5 Students

It was our pleasure to have invited Ms. Phyllis Ma, the representative from Admissions and Academic Liaison Office of The University of Hong Kong to give a talk about career and life planning for S5 students on 21 March 2018. In the talk, Ms. Ma provided our students with a lot of valuable admission information of The University of Hong Kong. After the talk, our students also joined tutor groups chaired by students who are currently studying in The University of Hong Kong. All the students were much benefited from the talk and tutor groups.

Math Achievement

Hong Kong Mathematical High Achievers Selection Contest and the National Hua Luo-geng Cup Math Competition are yearly mathematics competition for junior form students which aim at raising the mathematics standard of the secondary students in Hong Kong. The competitions have more than 200 participating secondary schools. Our team won awards both in Group and Individual.

Golden Jubilee Career Expo 2018

In order to help students plan and gather more information about their future career paths, the Careers Team and the Alumni Association successfully organized Golden Jubilee Career Expo 2018 on 10th February 2018. We were honoured to have 10 alumni who are all experienced practitioners in 8 different professions to share their valuable experience with our schoolmates. They are Ms Elsie Chan (Law), Mr Ho Cheuk Yip (Physiotherapy), Ms Kum Lok Yin (Medicine), Mr Ko Chi Pui (Engineering), Mr Choy Ka Lam (Business), Dr Tracy Wong (Clinical Psychology), Mr Wong Sin Chi (Mass Media), Ms Wu Shuk Ping (Business), Mr Yeung Tat Mo (Education) and Ms Ip Ka Lam (Engineering). They provided our students with a lot of useful information about the professions. Students showed great interests in their talks and were zealous to inquire more about the information of the career they want to pursue.

Golden Jubilee Celebration Celebrity Lecture–Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of our school, it was our greatest honour to have Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to give a talk on STEM education on 29th January 2018. Forms 3 and 4 students from our school, as well as students and teachers from other three government schools in the district, namely, Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School, Tin Shui Wai Government Secondary School and Yuen Long Public School were also invited to attend the sharing session. They were all inspired and enlightened by Professor Tong’s sharing.

After the lecture, Professor Tong conducted an interview with our students and teachers. The whole activity was a great success.

Yuen Long Walled Village Tour

Nine S.4 students joined a tour of Yuen Long walled village on 19 November, 2017. As the tour guides of the activity, our students guided the members of the tour to San Tian, one of the old walled villages in the New Territories. In the tour, students introduced different famous historic sites in San Tian, such as Statue of Man Tin Shui, Man Lun Fung Ancestral Hall, Man Ancestral Hall and Tun Yu Tong as well as Tai Fu Tai Mansion. Finally, students enjoyed Poon Choi and watched the performance with the tour members.

Cultural Exchange Tour: Visit from Our Sister School

Teachers and students from our sister school, Ningbo No.2 Middle School paid a visit to our school on 6 November 2017. Through joining our lessons, they were able to have a deeper understanding of our school and learning atmosphere. They also visited local heritage sites and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. This greatly enhanced cultural exchange among students and teachers of the schools.

The Community Chest Dress Causal Day 2017/2018

The Community Chest Dress Casual Day 2017/2018 was held on 12 October 2017. To actively support the event, students and teachers put on their causal attires on the day to school to show care for the needy. $37,633.1 was raised and the donation will be allocated to social welfare agencies supported by the Chest to help the needy and develop comprehensive social welfare services in Hong Kong in order to promote the idea of fraternity.

Sharing Session on 2017 Policy Address with Political Assistant to Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Mr. Kenneth NG

We were honoured to have invited Political Assistant to Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Mr. Kenneth NG to share with our S.4 and S.5 students on the 2017 Policy Address on 25 October 2017. As one of the highlights of the Liberal Studies Subject, the sharing session aimed to provide students an opportunity to better understand the 2017 Policy Address and develop our students’ sense of commitment to our society. Mr. Kenneth Ng stressed the importance of a number of new initiatives which are closely related to the Youth, including Innovation and Technology, Education, and Youth Development. Our students were very attentive and actively participated in the Q&A session. As a member of our alumni, Mr. Kenneth NG encouraged Heung Chung students to explore more and treasure opportunities to further equip themselves for the challenges of the future.

The Golden Jubilee Swimming Gala

The Golden Jubilee Swimming Gala of NT Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School’s was successfully held on October 3rd and 6th 2017. Unseasonably warm weather was no match for the enthusiasm and sportsmanship that the students displayed over the two-day event.

Like other years, the swimming gala was full of laughter, cheering, energy, and broken records. Cheering teams put on outstanding performances, and even the teachers got in on the action. Wong Man Fung (4D) and Chow Cheuk Wing (4B) were the record-breakers in 50m Backstroke, (30.82) and 100m Breaststroke (1:15.83) respectively.

It was our pleasure to have invited representatives from Admissions and Academic Liaison Office of The University of Hong Kong to give a talk about career and life planning for S6 students on 13 Oct 2017. In the talk, a lot of valuable admission information of The University of Hong Kong was provided for our students. After the talk, our students also joined the sharing sessions conducted by students who are currently studying in The University of Hong Kong. Some of the student tutors are also our alumni. All the students were much benefited from the talk and the sharing sessions.

House Meeting 2017/2018

The 2017/18 House Meeting was successfully held on 6th September. The house teachers and members of the four houses: Heung, Yuen, Chung and Hok, attended the meeting. During the meeting, the new house committee members introduced themselves to house members, gave reviews on their house performances in the previous year and united the members in promising to strive for excellence in the upcoming house events. House members showed their enthusiasm when they registered for events in the Swimming Gala, showing a strong team spirit. In order to further boost their team spirit, the house committee members led their members in singing their house songs and loudly shouted their house slogans which stirred up the emotions of everyone present. As the mood peaked, students of different forms, especially the S1 students, wholeheartedly cheered for their houses. The team spirit of each house in the meeting was impressive and this strengthened the students' sense of belonging for the school.

SA Election 2017/2018

The elections for the new Student Association of this academic year was successfully held in the school hall on 5th September. This year, there were three cabinets, Venus, Cognect and Volare. During the first two days of school, the cabinets canvassed their schoolmates for votes with their attractive promotional materials and banners, enveloping the school in a strong election atmosphere. During the pre-election Student Association Forum, the three cabinets were well-prepared and responded with skill and finesse to the challenging questions raised by their opponents and audience. In the election, each student was given a chance to vote for the cabinet they supported. This fully exhibited the democratic system in our school. Eventually, Cognect won the election with 326 votes, taking on the responsibility of serving our students in the new academic year.

Orientation Day For Parents of S.1 Students

An Orientation Day for parents of S.1 students was held by the Guidance Team on 19 August 2017. We introduced the administration, curriculum and different aspects of our school in the talk to our parents and students. They could also get to know more details about the school in the Q&A and class teachers sharing sessions after the talk. A talk entitled ‘Going Ahead With You Together’ was held in the afternoon. It kept the parents informed of the strategies of how to communicate and supervise their children so as to help them adapt to the secondary school life.
